Kalishakti- The director/filmer/editor of this video, has always been an amazingly lovable person.  Over the years, her passion for filmaking has evolved into a level of artistic professionalism that I am proud to know.  The YAAM, Berlin, is also a place that sits close to my hear.  I've always felt that it's sort of parallel to the positive vibes that the Audiopharmacy Collective tends to bring to table.  It is also one of the Audiopharmacy band's favorite places to perform when we're on our annual Euro-tour.  Big ups to the owners- Ortwin and Leah for creating such a beautiful platform for community and the arts.  Since our first time playing there (2003?), Audiopharmacy has been inspired to build something like this in SF.  Unfortunately the land, weather, and resources are just not crackin here...plan B- Visit Berlin and experience the YAAM for yourselves.  Let em know Auidopharmacy sent you and you may get a free coconut juice!  Enuff chit chat, check the video about the YAAM that Kalishakti cooked up feat. Poetry Prescription: A Multicultural Generation

Us young people ain't no fools
you can't pass down your racist views
onto a multicultural generation
we're connecting the dots on your corporate puzzle of oppression


Setting up shops in other countries
to extract cheap labor
while people here lose jobs & shelter
rents getting higher
it's called gentrification
and it's not the solution to the low wages that kept us poor in the first place!


That's what Che Guevara realized & why he rejected a money-hungry system
that only make the rich richer and the poor poorer
How can you condemn a country that offers free education & health care,
meaning regardless of your financial situation?


Mainstream media distorted to portray rebels negatively
just like they cast young people of color as mostly gangsters, drug dealers, and/or lazy
I'm TIRED of all the lies, corruption, and brainwashing
infatuations to conquer the moon ain't no different
than economic schemes to control hoods & countries all over the globe!
but our dedication only grows
when we get arrested for demanding less jails and better schools
when parents are forever working
yet getting paid barely enough to cover rent and food


But our voices will not be silenced!
Our cultures will resist being commercialized!
You cannot fool a multicultural generation!

of what it means to do one's own thing..

marching
to the beat of his drum
literally..
for years now i've known him to follow a passion for playing bucket drums
on the streets of vienna to the streets of brooklyn
san fran to berlin..
both intriguing and mesmorizing crowds at the same time..

he has put together a movie with some of his companions
among whom i am glad to say i belong
and i am humbled that he chose one of my songs for the soundtrack of the flick..

I just came across this video that Kalishakti made for us on the Amsterdam portion of our Euro-tour in 2009.  Nice memories eternally for sure.  Much luv 2 Kalishakti and all the Dutch loveliness we are blessed with every year.

VISUAL PRESCRIPTION: Martin Travers- Audiopharmacy family- Amsterdam

Martin is an unbelievably talented muralist typically portraying real life struggles and beauties.  This one of his more recent pieces painted at the YAAM in Berlin.  Beautiful. 

The central figure is an old woman, on one side is an eagle.The eagle is an African Fish Eagle which is endangered, fighting for survival. In many cultures the bird is symbolic of the connection between past and present, the spirit world and the material one. It is in the same position as the West African mythological SANKOFA bird, Looking back at the past. A past rife with struggling to survive,Colonialism, the middle passage (slavery). The image under the flying eagle is the diagram used for counting how many slaves fit on one ship. To her right is the present day. Representing how people are struggling to survive in this concrete jungle. The mask is a power symbol, giving the strength to carry on.
Many people come to Europe and America from Africa with an idea that life will be easy, money and aspirations easier to reach than back home. This idea is sold to them through corporate advertising, TV and so forth. The reality though is very different. Most are forced through lack of options to take the hardest jobs for meagre salaries, confronted by racism everyday. With the dream shattered the struggle to survive continues.
